GB Market Arrangements – Is there an alternative?

As part of the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP), the Alternative Energy Markets (AEM) Innovation Programme was tasked with supporting innovative demand side flexibility propositions in a future energy system. This programme includes the Intelligent Smart Energy Engine (ISEE) project which assesses the impact of AEM scenarios on tariff uptake, behavioural change and Energy Smart Appliance (ESA) subscription by consumers. Engage Consulting has been a key part of the ISEE project, primarily operating as the direct liaison with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and as we approach the end of the project, due to complete final activities during January 2025, we are excited about being able to share our analysis and learnings.

Phase 1 of the project scrutinised the UK’s current energy tariff system by modelling five future tariff designs and their effect on energy prices across different household locations and archetypes. Phase 2, known as the ISEE Retrofit, explored the real-world application of tariff scenarios within a trial environment where Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) residents were offered tailored ESA propositions through an OCC branded Energy Saver App based on their energy and building profiles. ESA propositions included solar panel, battery storage and heat pump installations with the majority of solutions understandably leaning toward the solar panel and battery storage combination. With Phase 2 now complete and our team working through project closure activities with DESNZ we are keen to explore the next steps in this area, so if the next steps for the UK energy market are of interest to you, please get in touch with our team to understand how the future of your organisation could benefit from the kind of innovative scenarios and solutions DESNZ have been exploring.

Whether it’s the creation and adjustment of consumer tariff options, installing and maintaining new domestic technology or establishing brand new market policies and arrangements, we have been able to glimpse how a future energy market could work and look forward to working with our established partners and building new relationships as we help to make the possibilities a reality.
