The Rt Hon. Ed Miliband’s vision for transforming Britain into a clean energy superpower captivated the audience. His speech emphasised establishing a stable and predictable regulatory environment to attract investment and drive the nation towards substantial energy reforms. By accelerating the adoption of clean energy, Miliband outlined a strategy to enhance national energy security and economic stability.
Engaging Discussions on Public Perception
A significant focus of the conference was on public engagement. A panel chaired by Matt Cole from The Fuel Bank Foundation, featuring industry leaders like Mary Starks from Ovo and Simon Oscroft from SO Energy, discussed the ongoing challenges in reshaping public perceptions of the energy sector. They emphasised the importance of simple, clear messaging about the benefits of new energy systems in terms of fairness and affordability, and the need to combat misinformation vigorously.
Consumer Confidence and Regulatory Goals
Emma Pinchbeck from Energy UK and Jonathan Brearley from Ofgem contributed to community and regulatory engagement discussions. Brearley highlighted Ofgem’s new Consumer Confidence Publication aimed at fostering trust through a culture change in customer service within the energy sector, showcasing the regulator’s commitment to transparency and responsiveness.
Mission-Led Collaboration for Clean Energy
The conference highlighted the government’s role in orchestrating the clean energy transition. The Rt Hon. Ed Miliband spoke about setting up a cross-government mission control to unify efforts across various sectors, illustrating a proactive approach to meeting the clean power targets set for 2030.
Investor Confidence and Economic Growth
The ‘Prosperity’ panel, chaired by Craig Hoggett of Newton, discussed strategies for sustaining the UK’s attractiveness to private capital essential for the Net Zero Transition. The panel, which included Julia Pyke from Sizewell C and Alice Barrs from RWE, explored how expanded powers for entities like the National Wealth Fund and the Crown Estate could strategically bolster home-grown supply chains.
Concluding Remarks on Clean Power and Flexibility
The event concluded with a strong message on the necessity of a flexible energy system to complement the drive towards a fully renewable grid by 2030. The discussions foreshadowed detailed explorations in future sessions about how flexibility in energy usage and advancements in demand-side response technologies could play pivotal roles in achieving these ambitious goals.
