Electric Vehicles

Transport is the UK’s largest emitting sector and to achieve Net Zero by 2050, households, companies and fleet owners will need to switch to electric vehicles (EVs).

Delivering Infrastructure to Decarbonise Transport

This will be the most significant overhaul to transport since the switch from horses and carts, seeing the bigger picture and understanding the barriers which slow or hinder infrastructure can make this possible

Transitioning from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to mass uptake of EVs requires the installation of millions of charge points in private and public spaces. Whilst the UK has seen great success in increasing rates of installation, there are still numerous barriers which can hinder or prevent infrastructure installation. Organisations and drivers moving to EVs must make plans to install accessible, affordable and safe EV charging infrastructure promptly.

Maximising EVs as Energy Assets

Installing EV charging infrastructure is important not only for charging vehicles for journeys but also for unlocking their potential as energy assets. EVs can support the balance and cleanliness of the grid as ‘batteries on wheels’ through participation in smart technology-enabled, demand side response services. As vehicle-to-everything technologies (V2X) become a widespread reality, including vehicle-to-grid (V2G), vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-home (V2H), the role of EVs in a flexible energy system will continue to increase. To make this a reality, charge points must be smart-enabled, interoperable and installed at scale in hard-to-reach private spaces.
