The Clean Power 2030 plan mandates rapid investment in a low-carbon energy system. Wind and solar will expand quickly, adding intermittent power. New baseload sources like Hinckley Point C won’t be ready until the late 2030s, and older power stations are nearing the end of their life. To stabilise the grid until then, energy flexibility is key.
What is Energy Flexibility?
Energy Flexibility is the use of assets such as:
- Hydro Storage.
- Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
- Small scale generation.
- Demand Side Response (DSR).
These assets are used to mitigate variances in generation and demand by providing additional power or shifting peak load. By managing these resources, energy flexibility helps stabilise the grid, reducing the need for new peak power plants and supporting a reliable, low-carbon energy system.
