What is the Feed In Tariff? (FIT)

The FIT scheme is an environmental programme aimed at promoting widespread uptake of a range of small-scale low carbon electricity generation technologies. Licensees are required to pay fixed tariffs to micro and small renewable generators for electricity generated and exported. 

The costs of the scheme are spread across all licensed electricity suppliers in Great Britain, based on their proportion of the electricity supply market. This is known as the levelisation process. 

FIT Licensees are required by Ofgem to submit quarterly and annual FIT Levelisation reporting. The FIT Levelisation process ensures scheme costs are distributed equally amongst suppliers. Licensees’ annual returns must be independently audited to ensure that figures have been correctly reported and that appropriate management controls are in place.
