Press Release: Engage Consulting and consortium partners begin laboratory testing of interoperable demand side response solutions.

Engage Consulting, a leader in UK energy market consultancy services and its consortium partners SMS plc (SMS) and Netherlands Measurement Institute (NMi), are pleased to confirm the start of laboratory testing of interoperable Demand Side Response (IDSR) solutions submitted by projects participating in the IDSR Programme.  This is a sub programme of the Flexibility Innovation Programme funded by the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero as part of the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP).

Unlocking the domestic demand side response market is a key enabler in our transition to a secure, flexible energy system in support of the UK Government’s ambition to reach Net Zero by 2050, and our laboratory testing project will play a crucial role in realising this.

The scope of our project includes both conformance and performance testing of Energy Smart Appliances (ESAs) against Publicly Available Standards (PAS) 1878 and 1879. The key purpose of these standards is to achieve interoperable DSR solutions.

Launched in September 2022, the project has two phases.  The first phase included the design and development of the test schemes over a 10-month period. The second phase, initiated last summer, included setting up the laboratory and executing the laboratory testing.

The consortium collectively provides three industry-leading and complementary organisations with the specialist skills, knowledge and experience required to deliver project success.  Engage Consulting is leading the overall project, governance and test plan and approach, NMi developed the test schemes and is providing test assurance, and SMS is providing the testing facility and executing the tests at their purpose built facility in Bolton.
