Our client needed to investigate a large trading dispute and this required complex processing of a large volume of industry settlement data. Manually processing this data would have taken several weeks of effort and so, as their trusted service provider, they asked us to help.
Our client successfully tendered for a LCNF project to assess novel commercial arrangements for smart grid connections. They needed support to facilitate and drive the internal and external stakeholder engagement necessary to identify, assess and trial potential solutions.
Companies providing localised heat and power schemes in business parks and as part of community energy enterprises, invariably deliver their energy infrastructure by installing private wires rather than utilising the existing public electricity network. This is hugely wasteful with roads being dug up simply to lay wires alongside existing wires.
The gas settlement arrangements allocate energy volumes to shippers based on meter readings. Shippers that failed to submit timely meter readings – or that submit incorrect readings – impact the volumes of gas allocated to other shippers. Such impacts, outside of their control, are an inherent settlement risk for all shippers.
The major energy suppliers wanted to collate and structure their requirements for smart meters in order to help shape future smart metering energy policy.
Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) are incentivised under the regulatory regime to reduce system losses. These are measured using settlement data as the difference between units entering and units leaving their distribution network. Retrospective adjustments made by suppliers to compensate for past errors supressed the units out part of the losses determination, making losses appear far higher than they actually were.
As part of the power and gas purchase agreement our client had with an international energy trading investment bank, they were required to provide independent assurance of the robustness of their business. The challenge was to review all industry related aspects of the business, identify risks and issues that could materially impact gross margin or gross margin reporting – and make recommendations for addressing these.
Following severe winter storms and the significant issues members of the public had contacting the right company to report a power cut, the Government charged all electricity network operators with implementing a single memorable three-digit emergency number that would automatically route the caller to the right network company. The ENA was directed to deliver this on behalf of the network companies.
Successful growth meant that our client was approaching the 250,000 customers threshold beyond which various additional licence obligations become effective. This required them to participate in the Warm Homes Discount Scheme which provides financial assistance to people in vulnerable situations and to the fuel poor.
